What Is Chair Yoga—and Is It Actually a Workout?

When you hear Chair Yoga, you might picture sitting in a chair doing a few gentle stretches and done.

And yes, we stretch.

But if you've ever been in one of our Chair classes at Gypsy, you already know there's a whole lot more happening.

Chair Yoga uses a chair to make movement more accessible for someone who may not be comfortable getting up and down from the floor. But accessible doesn't mean easy—and it definitely doesn't mean boring.

Chair fitness at Gypsy looks a little different.

Our Chair classes aren't built around doing the same routine over and over again.

We pull inspiration from Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Sculpt and strength training to create classes that are constantly evolving. We use the chair as a tool for support while we work on balance, mobility, coordination, flexibility and full-body strength.

Sometimes we're seated. Sometimes we're standing. Sometimes there are weights, bands, pilates balls, rings and blocks involved. And yes, sometimes I hear about it the next day. 😉

One of my favorite things a student wrote in a review was:

“I love how no class is ever the same.”

She went on to talk about being challenged, building strength throughout her entire body and feeling healthier since starting at Gypsy.

Another student summed up Chair Strength pretty perfectly:

“New moves. Fun people to share energy.”

THAT is what we're after.

We want you learning. Trying new things. Getting stronger. Laughing. Occasionally looking at your teacher like she's lost her mind. And realizing your body is capable of more than you thought.

Who are Chair classes for?

More people than you might think.

You might start here because you haven't exercised in years.

Maybe balance has become a concern. Maybe your knees don't love getting down to the floor. Maybe a traditional fitness class feels intimidating. Maybe you’re recovering from an injury. Or maybe you simply want a workout that challenges you without jumping, burpees and getting up and down from a mat.

You don't need to already be strong, flexible or "in shape." We meet you where you are—and then help you grow from there.

One of our Chair to Mat students actually used those exact words in her review:

“To meet people where they are. And help them grow into other areas.”

I don't think I could explain what we're trying to do any better than that.

But is Chair Yoga actually a workout?

Absolutely.

Something doesn't have to leave you dripping in sweat to be valuable movement.

As we get older, maintaining strength, balance and mobility becomes incredibly important. In our Chair classes, we're intentionally working on all three.

And progress isn't always measured by a number on a scale.

It's feeling steadier when you walk.

Reaching your shoes a little easier.

Getting out of a chair without thinking twice.

Picking something up.

Trying a heavier weight.

Feeling confident enough to try something you couldn't—or wouldn't—have tried six months ago.

That's progress.

And then there's the community.

This part is harder to explain until you experience it.

The music is on. The room is full. People know each other's names. There's laughing and talking before class. Your teacher knows you—and probably knows when you're capable of grabbing the heavier weights.

These classes have become their own little community.

And while the workout matters, I think wanting to come back matters just as much.

Chair Yoga doesn't have to be your final destination.

One of my favorite things to watch is someone come through our doors nervous because they haven't exercised in years.

They start with Chair Yoga.

Then maybe they try Chair Strength.

And eventually I hear:

"Do you think I could try one of the mat classes?"

YES.

That's actually why we created Chair to Mat—a class designed to help bridge that gap.

But here's the important part: you don't have to "graduate" from Chair Yoga either.

If you've found movement that makes you stronger, keeps you active and gives you a community you genuinely look forward to seeing every week, I'd say you've found something pretty special.

What should I expect at my first Chair class at Gypsy?

Expect to be welcomed.

Expect guidance.

Expect options.

Expect a teacher who wants to learn your name and help you succeed.

And expect that the class you take Tuesday probably won't look exactly like the one you take Thursday.

That's intentional.
